The history of the Medical Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, University of Diponegoro (PSKed FK Undip) cannot be separated from the history of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Diponegoro. In 1958, dr. Heyder bin Heyder and dr. Soerarjo Darsono went to the President of Diponegoro University (then Soedarto, SH) and expressed the idea of establishing a Faculty of Medicine, considering the large number of medical students at Gadjah Mada University who were registrars in Semarang.
The Diponegoro University Foundation, established in 1959, has a Faculty of Law, Economics, Teacher Training and Education and Faculty of Engineering. This fact further encouraged the desire to establish a Faculty of Medicine. In a joint meeting between the Semarang/Diponegoro University Foundation and the Diponegoro University Senate Management on June 10, 1960, at the instigation of dr. R. Atmadi Wreksoatmodjo, it was decided to establish the Faculty of Medicine. Subsequently, a Medical Faculty Establishment Committee was formed, chaired by Suyono Atmo, with the secretary Sri Widojati Notoprodjo, SH. In addition, a Technical Committee was also formed, chaired by Colonel dr. R. Soehardi, secretary of dr. Heyder bin Heyder, with members consisting of dr. R. Colonel, dr. A. Soerojo, dr. R. Marsaid S. Sastrodihardjo, dr. Tjiam Tjwan Hok and dr. R. Soedjati.
Since 1951 RSUP Semarang has been educating co-assistants from the Faculty of Medicine, Gadjah Mada University, especially in the Children’s, Midwifery and ENT sections. Even though at that time, the examinations for co-assistants were still being conducted in Yogyakarta, at least the Semarang Central General Hospital had experience in educating medical students, especially in clinical clerkships. This technical committee, on March 9, 1961, held a plenary meeting and made the following decisions:
- The hospital’s leadership is appointed ex officio as an official of the Dean so they can immediately start carrying out the preparations. While dr. Heyder bin Heyder as Assistant Dean and secretary.
- The committee considers the Semarang Central General Hospital representative enough to become a teaching hospital.
- The committee approved the six-and-a-half-year education curriculum plan that dr Atmadi Wreksoatmodjo had prepared.
- Considering that preparations for the pre-clinical level still need time, it was decided to open a Faculty of Medicine from the top level. Information was obtained: many senior students at Gadjah Mada University Yogyakarta are willing to move to Semarang.
On March 29, 1961, dr Heyder bin Heyder and dr. Soerarjo Darsono met Prof. Soedjono Djoened Poesponegoro, Dean of the Medical University of the University of Indonesia Jakarta, to seek advice and advice as well as assistance in preparation for the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine in Semarang. Prof. Soedjono understood the wishes of the committee and the local community, agreed to them and was even willing to assist lecturers from the University of Indonesia (can be implemented in 1963). As a result, the leadership of the Semarang General Hospital was replaced by dr. Atmadi Wreksoatmodjo to dr. Soepaat Soemosoedirdjo, so that it was only on July 1, 1961, that the Presidential Decree of Diponegoro University Semarang No. 782 C, regarding the appointment of dr. Soepaat Soemosoedihardjo as chairman of the Faculty of Medicine and dr. Heyder bin Heyder as Faculty Secretary. But because dr. Soepaat Soemosoedirdjo, who had just arrived from Klaten, had not yet explored the problem, so dr. Heyder bin Heyder was assigned to run all activities.
Other preparations made by dr. R. Soerarjo Darsono and dr. Heyder bin Heyder is negotiating with the leadership of the Faculty of Medicine, Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta and top-level students of FK UGM. On July 12, 1961, a delegation consisting of Soedarto SH as President of Diponegoro University Semarang, dr. Heyder bin Heyder as Secretary of the Faculty and dr. Soepaat Soemosoedirdjo as Head of RSUP Semarang faced the Minister of PTIP. Prof. Iwa Koesoemasoemantri (Minister of PTIP) welcomed the preparations for the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine, even saying, “For the Dean, I do not need someone smart, but what is needed is someone honest.”
Minister of Health, Prof. dr. Satrio, warmly welcomed and suggested that the first dean position be given to a member of the armed forces, considering that at the preparation stage there would be many difficulties because Central Java at that time was still in a state of emergency.
Neither the Minister of PTIP nor the Minister of Health agreed that the Head of the Faculty of Medicine was concurrently the Head of the Central General Hospital. Because of the stance of the two ministers, on the same day, July 12, 1961, in Jakarta, the delegation submitted a written request to the Minister of PTIP to appoint Colonel dr. Soewondo, doctor of DKT Kodam VII as dean, and dr. Heyder bin Heyder, the head of the Surgery Section of the Semarang Hospital, was his representative.
The PTIP Department was not satisfied with the names of the two candidates, so on July 19, 1961, it sent a telegram with a request to propose a third person’s name. By telegram on August 2, 1961, the leadership of Diponegoro University proposed the name of Soejono Atmo, the Deputy Governor of the Head of Central Java as a candidate. Nevertheless, this proposal also did not get approval from the adviser to the Minister of PTIP, considering that Soejono Atmo was not a doctor. Finally, the Diponegoro University Senate Meeting proposed three candidates, Colonel dr. Soewondo, dr. Heyder bin Heyder and dr. Atmadi Wreksoatmodjo.
In connection with the agreement in previous meetings that the opening of the Faculty of Medicine could be started immediately from the top level, on August 24, 1961, the last meeting was held, chaired by dr. Heyder bin Heyder and attended by all the Heads of Sections of the Semarang Central General Hospital, dr. Tendean from the Mental Hospital and dr. Go Gien Hoo of St. Elizabeth Hospital. They put forward some suggestions, plans, and hopes.
On August 31, 1961, another meeting was held in Yogyakarta. The representatives of the Preparatory Committee consisted of Soedarto, SH, dr. Heyder bin Heyder, dr. Sardjono Dhanoedibroto, dr. Atmadi Wreksoatmodjo and dr. Soedjati Soemodiharjo. Prof. Radioputro chairs the UGM Faculty of Medicine. Some of the crucial decisions at the meeting were as follows:
- A maximum of 40 students will move to Diponegoro University Semarang at the beginning of the transition.
- Transfer of students voluntarily.
- The student officially becomes a student of Diponegoro University and, after graduating, gets a diploma from Diponegoro University.
Based on the Decree of the Minister of Higher Education and Science (PTIP) No. 3 of 1961, dated September 12, 1961, the Faculty of Medicine, University of Diponegoro was officially established on October 1, 1961, and is the fifth faculty within the University of Diponegoro.
The Deputy Minister of PTIP inaugurated the Faculty of Medicine at the Diponegoro University First Anniversary Commemoration on September 30, 1961, at the Semarang City Hall Building. Education begins with top-level medical education, namely the Doctorandus Medicine level, which comes from the UGM Faculty of Medicine. Pioneered by 6 Doctorandus Medicine people in 1961, this number then increased to 30 people in 1962.
The Faculty of Medicine, Diponegoro University, was established on October 1, 1961. During the academic year of 1961/1962, 7 doctors of the first level or Semiarts were produced. Only then, on October 1, 1962, starting the 1962/1963 college year, we accepted first-year students, with a total of 82 new students who were the result of selection from 426 candidates for high school B graduates from 1959 and above.
The Dean, Colonel dr. Soewondo, delivered the inaugural lecture in the form of a general lecture of the Undip Medical Faculty, with the title “Guided Education.” After that, it was continued with the ceremony of giving a doctor’s certificate to the first graduate of the Faculty of Medicine, Diponegoro University, namely dr. Suradi.
Since its establishment of FK Undip on October 1, 1961, until now, FK Undip has continuously developed medical education programs. FK Undip is affiliated with Dr. Hospital.
